Alicia Silverstone: Health, Food Cravings and Raising a Vegan Child.

Updated: Feb 28

Alicia Silverstone glows off-screen just as much as she does when the camera is rolling. That's because this actress, activist, mom, and entrepreneur doesn't just talk the talk, she walks it, runs it, and keeps raising the bench mark of achievement for all of us. It was no question that when presented with opportunity to have her as one of our 2019 Eco-Excellence Awards judges, we had to have her. She has become an expert in environmentally conscious, plant-based and sustainable lifestyle. During her time as judge we had the opportunity to get to know Alicia more personally. Check out our conversation below.

Q: You made the choice to be vegan and to raise your child Bear as vegan. What motivated you?

A: It’s the healthiest possible foundation he could have. Not only can you get all the vitamins, nutrients, and minerals you need from kind plant foods, but you’ll most likely even get higher doses than your animal-eating friends! You will fend off ailments and illnesses, all while having abundant energy, feeling zen, and thinking clearer because you‘re not bogged down by not feeling good.

Q: Plant-based diets are gaining popularity as people become more aware of the key role that nutrition plays in the overall wellbeing.

What would be your advice for moms looking to transition their family to a plant-based diet?

A: Stop bringing unhealthy items into the house and start making delicious plant-based recipes (there are some amazing ones in The Kind Diet and The Kind Mama). Don't talk about it; just do it! Good food is good food. If your kids reject it at first since they're jonesing for the nasty fix, they will come around when they get truly hungry. You need to break the addiction. Trust me they’ll come around, so stay strong! Start moving away from dairy, sugar, and animal foods, and instead get cozy with whole grains and plant-based proteins and veggies. Make yummy tacos  and homemade pizza. Let fruit be their candy! Set your child up with the best possible foundation of foods to help them be the healthiest they can be and thrive. You'd be surprised at how open kids are to trying new things if you also embrace them! I share a bunch of recipes from both my books and kitchen on my blog, thekindlife.com. There are some also handy posts on kid-friendly lunches and snacks!

Q: What is your and Bear’s greatest indulgence?

A: It’s like I’ve found this magical secret—except it’s no secret—that keeps us feeling both nourished and satisfied! In the instance of feeling like being rebellious, there’s always some recipe we can whip up or a restaurant we can eat at to scratch the craving and still feel good. For example, if we’re craving something creamy and cheesy, I can make my Cheesy, Oozy Guacamole Bean Dip from The Kind Diet. It completely satisfies our cheesy urge, is quick, and delicious! Another favorite at our house that I highly recommend, especially after a late night, is toast with Mikyoko’s butter, sliced heirloom tomatoes, and a little sea salt. It’s out of this world.

Q: What is your best beauty secret?

A: The secret to glowing skin is a healing kind diet. This builds collagen from within your body because of all the nourishing foods you’re consuming. Avoid dairy, sugar, and meat and eat your greens!! Greens such as kale, bok choy, collards, watercress, and seaweed (not technically a green, but it’s so important for the skin) are full of a host of great things like vitamin B9, vitamin K, folate, calcium, and iron. Nurture your body with all kinds of veggies made in a healthy variety of cooking styles. Fill up on whole grains (like brown rice and quinoa) beans (from adzuki, black beans). Find some seriously delicious, healing, and glow-y recipes in The Kind Diet, The Kind Mama, or my blog TheKindLife.com such as Watercress with Creamy Tahini Dressing and Toasted Sesame Seeds.

Q: What is your favorite MyKind Organics product?

A: Before we made our own truly clean mykind Organics supplements I didn’t want to take anything on a regular basis. Now that mykind Organics exists, I take several every day so it’s really hard to pick one favorite! I will go with our Vitamin C Cherry Tangerine spray as my absolute favorite, it’s so tasty! But I can’t help but mention our Gummies, not just the Multis but also Elderberry and Turmeric Gummies, none of these have added sugar, just pure sweetness from organic apples and peaches. I also love the chewable Vitamin D3, Vitamin B12 Spray, Sleep Well, and Ashwaganda.

Q: What is the best advice you have been given?

A: Eat more plants! I credit this diet 100 percent with improving my own health and wellness – I’ve ditched my asthma inhaler, stopped my weekly allergy shots, lost weight, and found my skin and hair to be more radiant than ever. Not too bad for saving animals and the planet!  When you feel your best, you are unstoppable! Especially now as a mother... Being a mama requires every morsel of your being, you want to feel your best and get the best quality of sleep, so you have ample energy to be present and available for every precious moment with your little one. Embracing The Kind Diet has without a doubt supercharged my ability to feel more energized and sustained, so I can truly savor every moment with Bear!

Q: What is on your bucket list?

A: I’m grateful to keep living this amazing life I get to live, but here are a couple bucket list items that stick out at this moment:

Finish my house project, Clean out emails, Travel to India and Israel, I’m very curious. I would love to live in Europe, maybe France or Italy, for a chunk of time.

Q: What is one thing you wish you knew when you were younger?

A: I wish when I was younger someone held my hand and said “Do the Kind Diet.” I credit this plant-based diet 100 percent to improving my life. Once I started doing it I felt so in control. My health and looks changed and it immediately healed and freed my body and mind. Had I started this diet when I was 16, I think it could have done wonders for me.

Q: It’s great to see you popping up on screen in more prominent roles, but it is also great to see you continue to work towards ending animal testing in the cosmetics industry. When you started, were you aware of what a platform could give you to pursue your other passions - animal rights advocacy, writing nutrition & wellness books, etc - and had you already mapped out these pursuits? What’s next?

A: Ever since I was a little girl, I dreamed of having some kind of club to help animals. When I became an actress, I couldn’t believe my good fortune of coming into contact and working with these massive animal and environmental advocacy organizations. I did not go into acting knowing this, but it was a phenomenal thing that came out of it. Advocacy work is powerful in so many ways. When I was overwhelmed with fame as a teenager, working with animals was incredibly healing.

In terms of what’s next, last fall the company I co-founded, mykind Organics, launched 16 Herbal supplements that I’m so thrilled about! These products are so special because we source ingredients from sustainable organic farms and use a groundbreaking Organic, Non-GMO extraction method without the use of conventional corn alcohol or other harsh chemicals commonly used. Supplements aside, last year I starred in Paramount Network’s TV series American Woman and played Diane Keaton’s daughter in the film Book Club. This spring, I did a short with Zach Braff and Florence Pugh called In the Time It Takes to Get There. It’s a comical take on social influencers set in the 19th century; you will have a good laugh! Also, The Lodge, a film I worked on premiered at Sundance and is in theaters this fall. It’s a psychological thriller that I loved working on, and it will definitely keep you at the edge of your seat! I also did a reboot of my website, thekindlife.com, which serves as an extension of my books The Kind Diet and The Kind Mama and an ultimate resource for healthy and eco-friendly living.
